The Virgin Martyr St. Cecilia Skateboard Deck
$250.00
This limited edition 2023 skate deck features Kehinde Wiley's 2008 painting titled The Virgin Martyr St. Cecilia, arguably Wiley's most impressive painting from his series DOWN. Reimagined from The Virgin Martyr of St. Cecilia by Stefano Maderno, Wiley has transformed the famous sculpture of the martyred Saint Cecilia exploring the senseless violence towards black men in reference to the persecution and discrimination at the center of the legend of Cecilia. The series DOWN led to the expansion of An Archaeology of Silence, which was first exhibited at Foundazione Giorgio Cini as a collateral event of the 59th international art exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Both DOWN and An Archeology of Silence were both inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger's The Dead Christ in the Tomb as well as historical paintings and sculptures of fallen warriors and figures in the state of repose. Wiley created an unsettling series of prone Black bodies, re-conceptualizing classical pictorial forms to create a contemporary version of monumental portraiture, resounding with violence, pain, and death, as well as ecstasy.
