Maze of Power Socks Maze of Power Socks
Maze of Power Socks
These woven cotton blend socks feature the background used in A Portrait of Olusegun Obasanjo, Former president of Nigeria (2023) by Kehinde Wiley.  This painting was a part of the Maze of Power, a series of portraits of African heads of state that explores the relationship between African aesthetics and political power. Wiley met with each leader for about an hour and 45 minutes, showing them a catalog of Western paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The leaders could choose their own clothes, pose, and accessories. Wiley began working on the series in 2012, traveling to Africa to meet with the leaders. The exhibition was originally organized by the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris, and was later shown at the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar. Red Sword Socks
These woven cotton blend sock features  the background used in Yachinboaz Ben Yisrael II (2021) by Kehinde Wiley.  The painting takes its inspiration from European art history and portrait traditions.  The subject, holding a golden-sheathed sword, adopts the same stoic pose as many historic European monarchs did in their court portraits.  Rather than elaborate robes or furs that would be typical of someone maintaining this stance, Wiley's sitter is dressed in a vibrant red crewneck, jeans and Nike sneakers.    One size fits most Cotton blend stretch Kehinde Wiley printed on the sole Net proceeds from your purchase support the artist in residence program Black Rock Sénégal, founded by Wiley in 2019.  ...

Simeon the God Receiver Silk Robe Simeon the God Receiver Silk Robe
Simeon the God Receiver Silk Robe
This limited edition silk robe features Kehinde Wiley’s 2015 painting Simeon the God Receiver, reimagined from the icon that is based on the story of Saint Simeon. According to tradition, he died at the great age of 360 after receiving the infant Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem. Wiley’s model, Eric Murphy, is covered in tattoos from head to toe – including a rosary, a portrait of his son, and the Rolling Stones magazine logo on his stomach. Murphy’s overt appearance immediately renders the thematic injustices of omission within the historical practice of western portraiture to its viewer. In his sacred stance, Murphy is accompanied by a flat, fluorescent botanical background, with plant tendrils entwining around his legs. 100% silk with a satin finish 19mm. Sizes: Small, Medium, Large Net proceeds from your purchase support the artist in residence program Black Rock Sénégal, founded by Wiley in 2019.  ...
