Dimietrus Study, 2021

Dimietrus Study, 2021

Kehinde Wiley announces the release of Dimietrus Study (2021), a new limited edition artist print created as a charitable partnership in support of Black Rock Senegal. All net proceeds from the signed edition of 30 prints will benefit Black Rock artist-in-residence program.

This print release is the third annual charitable partnership between Kehinde Wiley and Black Rock Senegal, following the releases of Sharrod Hosten Study III (2020) and Head of a Young Girl Veiled (2019).

About the artwork: Kehinde Wiley’s Dimietrus Study (2021) features a portrait of a young, Black New Yorker amidst a wreath of pink and blue flora that Wiley originally created in 2008. Returning to the composition, Wiley explains, “This portrait continues a theme that exists within the selection of prints I have made for Black Rock Senegal. Each addresses the complicated intersection between the masculine and the feminine, the historic and the present. Much like the Black Rock Senegal program, and the artists we welcome each year, these works draw inspiration from a beautiful and terrible past to offer a new optimism for how we can reclaim tradition to reimagine our shared future.”

Sharrod Hosten Study III, 2020

Sharrod Hosten Study III, 2020

Kehinde Wiley has partnered with Sean Kelly Gallery to release Sharrod Hosten Study III (2020), the second annual limited edition artist print created as a charitable partnership in support of Black Rock Senegal. All net proceeds from the signed edition of 30 prints will benefit Black Rock as charitable contributions.

In 2019 Kehinde Wiley partnered with Absolut Art to release the inaugural Black Rock charitable print, Head of a Young Girl Veiled (2019).

About the artwork: Ten years ago, Kehinde Wiley painted a series of portraits of Sharrod Hosten. This print, Sharrod Hosten Study III, renders the model in three-quarter profile with his eyes turned directly toward the viewer. This classic pose references centuries-long practices in European portraiture which align masculinity with a strong gaze. Subverting traditional renderings of race and gender, Wiley adorns his subject with pink carnations and ladybugs, offering a profoundly delicate portrait of this young, Black man.

Head of a Young Girl Veiled, 2019

In 2019, Kehinde Wiley and Absolut Art partnered on the first ever print edition as part of a charitable partnership to support Black Rock Senegal artist in residence program. All net proceeds from the signed edition of 30 prints benefited the Black Rock artist-in-residence program.

About the artwork: “I chose Head of a Young Girl Veiled especially for Black Rock because it speaks to the layered complexities of sight and knowledge, provoking inquiry by sitting at the intersection between the masculine and feminine, the historic and the present. It draws inspiration from a beautiful and terrible past and seeks to posit a new vocabulary for how we can all move forward as thinkers, artists, and global citizens,” says Kehinde Wiley.
