This limited edition silk robe features Kehinde Wiley’s 2015 painting Simeon the God Receiver, reimagined from the icon that is based on the story of Saint Simeon. According to tradition, he died at the great age of 360 after receiving the infant Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem. Wiley’s model, Eric Murphy, is covered in tattoos from head to toe – including a rosary, a portrait of his son, and the Rolling Stones magazine logo on his stomach. Murphy’s overt appearance immediately renders the thematic injustices of omission within the historical practice of western portraiture to its viewer. This limited edition silk twill scarf features Kehinde Wiley’s painting, ‘Equestrian Portrait of the Count-Duke Olavares," 2005, which is a reinterpretation of the portrait of the Count-Duke by Diego Velázquez. The painting shows Wiley’s interest in updating aristocratic portraiture for the contemporary audience by depicting a Black subject posed in a powerful equestrian stance as his horse prepares to gallop into battle. While the horse majestically stands on its hindlegs, the subject looks back to engage with the viewer, portraying an air of confidence and sophistication.
