This limited edition silk scarf features Kehinde Wiley's Portrait of Mame Kéwé Aminata Lô 2021. This is a painting from the body of work that Kehinde developed during the period of COVID-19. Kehinde spent this last year in quarantine at Black Rock Sénégal, the artist compound and residency program he opened in 2019 on the coast of Dakar, Sénégal. In the absence of any ability to follow his traditional streetcasting methods, which enable him to find models at random on the streets of New York and many other international cities around the world, Kehinde decided to focus on the people and friends of people immediately surrounding him in Dakar. According to tradition, he died at the great age of 360 after receiving the infant Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem. Wiley’s model, Eric Murphy, is covered in tattoos from head to toe – including a rosary, a portrait of his son, and the Rolling Stones magazine logo on his stomach. Murphy’s overt appearance immediately renders the thematic injustices of omission within the historical practice of western portraiture to its viewer.
