This all-over printed notebook features one of Kehinde Wiley’s early works from the series Conspicuous Fraud, a group of paintings which emphasize and explore the beauty of natural black hair. The Conspicuous Fraud Series #1 (Eminence) Notebook draws inspiration from Wiley’s artwork of the same name, made by the artist while he was in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2001. Twisting and turning through the sky, the contours of the subject’s oversized Afro hairdo transform into clouds, confusing the relationship of the subject and the background of the picture.

Established in 2019, Black Rock Senegal is a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program founded by Kehinde Wiley in Dakar, Senegal. The program brings together international artists to live and work at Wiley’s coastal compound for 1-3 month residencies. Designed by Senegalese architect Abib Djenne, the complex includes a residence and studio space for Wiley along with 3 single-occupancy residency apartments with adjacent studio spaces. Our mission is to support new artistic creation through collaborative exchange and to incite change in the global discourse about Africa.
