Aesthetically Terrifying T-Shirt

A response. A reclamation. A statement.

The Aesthetically Terrifying T-Shirt transforms a pointed critique into something meant to be seen, worn, and reconsidered.

The phrase responds to comments made by Erin Scavino, Director of the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program, in connection with the removal of Kehinde Wiley’s Young Artists After Siamesas 1960 from the U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo.

Rather than shy away from the words, Kehinde Wiley reclaims them.

AESTHETICALLY TERRIFYING appears across the back of a black T-shirt in an intricate floral graphic, turning the phrase into a celebration of artistic freedom, visibility, beauty, and power. A subtle KW logo appears on the front.

Death of Hyacinth Notebook
This notebook features Kehinde Wiley’s 2022 painting titled The Death of Hyacinth (Ndey Buri Mboup), first exhibited in Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence at Foundazione Giorgio Cini in 2022, as a collateral event of the 59th international art exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Expanding on Kehinde Wiley's body of work DOWN from 2008, which was initially inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger's The Dead Christ in the Tomb as well as historical paintings and sculptures of fallen warriors and figures in the state of repose, Wiley created an unsettling series of prone Black bodies, re-conceptualizing classical pictorial forms to create a contemporary version of monumental portraiture, resounding with violence, pain, and death, as well as ecstasy. DOWN | Femme Piquée Skateboard Deck
This limited edition skate deck features Kehinde Wiley's 2008 painting, Femme Piquée Par Un Serpent Study III from his notable series, DOWN. This unique deck showcases the artist's reinterpretation of Auguste Clésinger’s 1847 sculpture of the same title, with Wiley's distinctive touch. Wiley's 2008 painting brings this iconic image to life on a high-quality skateboard deck, capturing the essence of vulnerability and sensuality. The central figure, clad in blue jeans, an orange hoodie, and a gold chain, reclines on a linen-clothed table, head tilted towards the viewer in a provocative stance. The exposed underwear hints at the vulnerability and eroticism of being off one's feet, turning a seemingly powerless moment into a bold artistic statement. -Cotton dust bag included in every order-Hand-numbered, editions of 400-100% sustainably sourced hard rock maple- 8"W x 31.875 L Designed in New York City. DOWN | Morpheus Skateboard Deck
This limited edition skate deck features Kehinde Wiley's 2008 painting Morpheus, reimagined from the Jean-Antoine Houdon 1777 marble sculpture of the same name. Feautred in the 2008 exhibition DOWN at Deitch Projects, the series references and re-conceptualizes classic pictorial forms of heroism in the face of death. Morpheus features a model from Brooklyn, lain across a while sheet while florals from the background spring into life around his body. Unlike its 18th century counterpart, he addresses onlookers with direct eye contact and a seductive look of invitation, with the repeating floral background protruding into the foreground. -Cotton dust bag included in every order-Hand-numbered, editions of 400-100% sustainably sourced hard rock maple- 8"W x 31.875 L Designed in New York City. Earl of Rochester Basketball and Plinth
This open edition 2023 leather basketball features Kehinde Wiley’s 2013 painting John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester from the artist's series The World Stage: Jamaica. First exhibited at Stephen Friedman Gallery in London, Wiley, using his notorious street casting method, places contemporary Jamaican natives in heroic poses that reference directly from 17th and 18th century British portraiture and feature background patterns inspired by British textiles. The body of works offers a corrective to the omission of the black figure from art history and specifically comments on the nature of the relationship between the United Kingdom and its former colonial holding. Wiley’s exhibition The World Stage: Jamaica is part of a broader project titled "The World Stage," which presents portraits of black and brown men and women the artist met in China, Brazil, Nigeria, Haiti, Israel, and India.  Regulation size, premium leather basketball Oiled pine basketball plinth with laser cut Kehinde Wiley......

Portrait of Llewellyn Doris Silk Scarf
Introducing our exclusive silk charmeuse scarf, a limited edition scarf featuring Kehinde Wiley's artwork, Portrait of Llewellyn Doris, 2019, aptly named after the esteemed model. This scarf is part of a unique series where Wiley skillfully crafted oval portraits adorned in armor. At the heart of this scarf lies the captivating portrait, seamlessly blending with whimsical floral details gracefully drifting across the silk and its borders. The backdrop of the portrait pays homage to the intricate patterns found on roller-printed cotton cloth produced in Russia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Interestingly, this patterned fabric served as the lining for a green, embossed-velvet munisak ("robe") crafted during the same historical era. 100% Silk Charmeuse 36 x 36 in (91 x 91 cm)Hand rolled hemPrinted on both sidesMade in China Net proceeds from your purchase support the artist in residence program Black Rock Sénégal, founded by Wiley in 2019....
