This tapestry blanket features extracted elements from Kehinde Wiley’s 2008 painting Place Soweto (National Assembly) from The World Stage: Africa, Lagos-Dakar series, first exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem. The woven blanket features ornate background details from the original painting, showcasing the use of intricate floral blooms and vines that are exhibited throughout the series. Created during Wiley’s expanded visits to Nigeria and Senegal in the mid 2000s, and as an extension of his multinational “The World Stage” series, he brings into focus African youth in both cities, highlighting local representations of pre-colonial and post-colonial political power.
