Red Sword Deck of Cards

$30.00

This deck of playing cards features Yachinboaz Ben Yisrael II (2021) by Kehinde Wiley.  The painting takes its inspiration from European art history and portrait traditions.  The subject, holding a golden-sheathed sword, adopts the same stoic pose as many historic European monarchs did in their court portraits.  Rather than elaborate robes or furs that would be typical of someone maintaining this stance, Wiley's sitter is dressed in a vibrant red crewneck, jeans and Nike sneakers.

54 playing cards, linen embossed finish.

Wiley will donate all net proceeds from the Kehinde Wiley Shop to directly support Black Rock, his artist in residence program in Dakar, Senegal.

About Black Rock Senegal

Established in 2019, Black Rock Senegal is a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program founded by Kehinde Wiley in Dakar, Senegal. The program brings together international artists to live and work at Wiley’s coastal compound for 1-3 month residencies. Designed by Senegalese architect Abib Djenne, the complex includes a residence and studio space for Wiley along with 3 single-occupancy residency apartments with adjacent studio spaces. Our mission is to support new artistic creation through collaborative exchange and to incite change in the global discourse about Africa. More information about Black Rock is available online at www.blackrocksenegal.org.
