Maze of Power Socks
$29.00
These woven cotton blend socks feature the background used in A Portrait of Olusegun Obasanjo, Former president of Nigeria (2023) by Kehinde Wiley. This painting was a part of the Maze of Power, a series of portraits of African heads of state that explores the relationship between African aesthetics and political power. Wiley met with each leader for about an hour and 45 minutes, showing them a catalog of Western paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries. The leaders could choose their own clothes, pose, and accessories. Wiley began working on the series in 2012, traveling to Africa to meet with the leaders. The exhibition was originally organized by the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac in Paris, and was later shown at the Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar.
