This scarf is part of a unique series where Wiley skillfully crafted oval portraits adorned in armor. At the heart of this scarf lies the captivating portrait, seamlessly blending with whimsical floral details gracefully drifting across the silk and its borders. The backdrop of the portrait pays homage to the intricate patterns found on roller-printed cotton cloth produced in Russia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This limited edition silk scarf features Kehinde Wiley's Portrait of Mame Kéwé Aminata Lô 2021. This is a painting from the body of work that Kehinde developed during the period of COVID-19. Kehinde spent this last year in quarantine at Black Rock Sénégal, the artist compound and residency program he opened in 2019 on the coast of Dakar, Sénégal. In the absence of any ability to follow his traditional streetcasting methods, which enable him to find models at random on the streets of New York and many other international cities around the world, Kehinde decided to focus on the people and friends of people immediately surrounding him in Dakar. Providing the image of an anonymous figure, a white shroud clings to a muscular brown body, beneath which appears only faint impressions of his musculature and facial features. This limited edition silk robe features Kehinde Wiley’s 2015 painting Simeon the God Receiver, reimagined from the icon that is based on the story of Saint Simeon. According to tradition, he died at the great age of 360 after receiving the infant Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem. Wiley’s model, Eric Murphy, is covered in tattoos from head to toe – including a rosary, a portrait of his son, and the Rolling Stones magazine logo on his stomach. Murphy’s overt appearance immediately renders the thematic injustices of omission within the historical practice of western portraiture to its viewer. In his sacred stance, Murphy is accompanied by a flat, fluorescent botanical background, with plant tendrils entwining around his legs. 100% silk with a satin finish 19mm. This limited edition silk twill scarf features Kehinde Wiley’s painting ‘Two Heroic Sisters of the Grassland,' 2011.  Titled after the Chinese parable about two Mongolian sisters, who almost sacrifice their lives to protect their flock of sheep, the piece depicts two subjects, possibly brothers, who stand side by side with their arms in a salute. Based around a story which explores themes of dedication and perseverance, this piece demonstrates the power of unity over division and the importance of the black community to engage in harmony, especially in the face of adversity.
