This 3 x 3 in square patch features Kehinde Wiley’s 2009 painting Nelson Silva Eaflanzino Jr. The model, of the same name, is a resident of Vidigal, a neighborhood and favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The models for this series were sourced from the surrounding Rio de Janeiro area for The World Stage: Brazil series, some of which were recruited at Petrobas Espaco Cultural Nos do moro, a non-profit school for the Arts, where many actors from the 2003 Academy Award nominated film City of God were discovered. Confidently gazing into the viewer's eyes, Eaflanzino is immersed in a floral background that protrudes around his body and into the foreground, which is common practice for many compositions throughout Wiley’s oeuvre. This lightweight, limited edition towel features Kehinde Wiley’s 2008 painting Sleep, reimagined from Jean-Bernard Restout’s 1771 painting of the same name. With luminously painted skin, draped in funerary-like cloth with his feet crossed atop a wooden plank, Wiley personifies his model to reflect the theological narratives permeating throughout his oeuvre. In an attempt to differentiate his works from the singular figure studies of his time, Restout included wings and poppies to his subject, composing a larger narrative beyond the skill of the artist's hand. This limited edition cotton bandana features Kehinde Wiley's Portrait of Nelly Moudime II (2020), a painting from the body of work that Kehinde developed in New York in early 2019, exploring the continued resonance of 1990s hip hop culture in the city. The models from this body of work are people that Kehinde met on the streets of New York, particularly in and around SoHo. The model is named Nelly Moudime and she lives in New York. She has previously been the subject of two other Kehinde Wiley paintings — an oval painting from a series featuring models in classical European armor (Portrait of Nelly Moudime, 2019), as well as a group portrait (Portrait of Nelly Moudime and Najaee Hall, 2020). The background pattern references an 18th-century British textile design by William Klburn, designer and calico printer, Wallington, Surrey depicting mixed flowers and their trailing roots. This limited edition cotton bandana features Kehinde Wiley's 2013 Portrait of James Hamilton, Earl of Arran. As part of the “The World Stage: Jamaica” series, it was first exhibited at Stephen Friedman Gallery, in London. Reimagined from the 1623 Daniel Mytens the Elder painting of the same name, Wiley depicts a young Black man from Kingston to mimic the pose of his 17th century counterpart. With his hands at his side, he is positioned forwardly with his head tilted right as his gaze meets the viewer. A William Morris inspired textile background accompanies him, incorporating the same color palette as the model’s shirt, along with the botanical tendrils that overlap his body.  The delineation between the model’s clothing and the background are almost indiscernible.  24 x 24 in (61 x 61 cm). This limited edition silk twill scarf features Kehinde Wiley’s painting, ‘Equestrian Portrait of the Count-Duke Olavares," 2005, which is a reinterpretation of the portrait of the Count-Duke by Diego Velázquez. The painting shows Wiley’s interest in updating aristocratic portraiture for the contemporary audience by depicting a Black subject posed in a powerful equestrian stance as his horse prepares to gallop into battle. While the horse majestically stands on its hindlegs, the subject looks back to engage with the viewer, portraying an air of confidence and sophistication. Our limited edition Green Leaf umbrella uniquely features not one but two of Kehinde Wiley paintings. The mirrored fists are sampled from Three Wise Men Greeting Entry Into Lagos (2008), first exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem as a part of The World Stage: Africa, Lagos-Dakar series. The painting is in the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts permanent collection, and references the Art Deco statue Welcome to Lagos, which stood in Nigeria along the Lagos-Ibadan toll gate between 1991 to 2004. The green botanical background references a William Cooke wallpaper pattern from the late 19th century, featured in Wiley’s Lunch with Inettia, Lucemy and Soukenya (2021), which was shown in the group show Luncheon on the Grass at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in Los Angeles.
